Offsite Program
Rich Gillespie will take a look at Purcellville in the 1850s. He'll examine how people in and around town confronted John Brown's Raid, secession, enlistment, and training; the coming of the Army of the Potomac to town; the great generals on Main Street; the reality check after the war at Manassas; the Fall 1864 burning raid; and Mosby's last fight in Loudoun three weeks before Appomattox. He will also discuss Purcellville's rebound from the failed War for Southern Independence. Gillespie taught American history at Loudoun Valley High School for 30 years. For the past 14 years he has worked with the Mosby Heritage Area as Director of Education, Executive Director, and now as Historian Emeritus to promote preservation through education.
