Science On Tap

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Offsite Programs
Far-out, science fiction-type discoveries in physics and biology have benefited our economy. Karel Svoboda will highlight Loudoun County laboratories and start-up companies that have used these revolutionary advances to build the next generation microscopes for imaging the brain. These microscopes are based on half a dozen fundamental discoveries in physics and biochemistry over the last 70 years.
Karel Svoboda, Group Leader at Janelia Research Campus, is studying the structure, function and plasticity of neocortical circuits.
The program will be held at Old Ox Brewery, 44652 Guildford Dr., #114, Ashburn.

Science On Tap

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Offsite Programs
On tap are two topics from the Janelia Research Campus:
XX and XY: Guidelines or actual rules? Sex determination in the animal kingdom. Research Scientist Kate McDole will explore some of the weird, wild and wacky ways sex is determined in nature, and what happens when it goes awry. McDole is developing and using the latest imaging technologies to examine how the first tissues and organs form in the early mouse embryo.

All About Molecules. Senior Scientist Eric Schreiter will describe interesting molecules, how we know what molecules look like and how we engineer molecules to help us figure out how the brain works. Schreiter came to Janelia to prototype new protein-based tools for neurobiology.

The program will be held at Old Ox Brewery, 44652 Guildford Dr., #114, Ashburn.
